Per-cycle energy is typical for a 6–7 kg front-loader; the motor, pump and spin are ~0.2–0.3 kWh and the rest is water heating. A top-loader washing at room temperature uses ~0.2–0.4 kWh a cycle. Why the heater is the whole story

Heating water takes far more energy than spinning a drum. It takes about 1.163 watt-hours to heat one litre of water by one degree— so warming ~18 litres from a ~25°C tap to 40°C needs roughly 0.3 kWh, and to 60°C about 0.7 kWh, all on top of the ~0.2–0.3 kWh the motor uses either way. A real cotton cycle heats more water from a colder winter tap and loses some heat to the drum and clothes, so measured totals run a little higher than this ideal-case sum — which is why the table's 40°C and 60°C figures sit above these.

That's why a cold cycle is cheap and a hot cycle isn't — and why front-load vs top-load barely matters for the bill. Front-loaders cost more only because their default cycles heat the water; run one on a cold cycle and it's as cheap as a top-loader (and uses far less water).
