What does it actually cost to run an air conditioner, refrigerator, ceiling fan, geyser or washing machine in India? We built this from official Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) label data, Indian standards (IS), real-world field measurements, and 2025–26 state electricity tariff orders — not from manufacturer marketing. Every figure shows the annual electricity (in units/kWh) and the yearly cost at a typical ₹8 per unit.
Key Numbers at a Glance
How to read these numbers
- Units = kWh. One "unit" on your electricity bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Running cost = annual units × your per-unit tariff.
- Tariff assumption: ₹8/unit. Indian tariffs are set state-by-state and are slab-based, so what matters is your marginal (top-slab) rate. ₹8 is a typical higher-slab figure — see the state-by-state table. To adjust any cost here, multiply by (your rate ÷ 8).
- BEE label vs real life. BEE label figures come from a standardised lab test (e.g. ACs at 1,600 hours/year). Your real usage depends on hours, weather, settings and the age of the appliance, so treat these as comparison figures, not a bill forecast.
- Star ratings changed on 1 January 2026. BEE tightened thresholds, so a 2025 5-star AC is now labelled a 2026 4-star. We flag the label year wherever it matters.
How Much Does It Cost to Run a 1.5-Ton AC Per Year?
A 1.5-ton 5-star split AC costs about ₹5,760 a year to run, versus about ₹7,600 for a 3-star — so choosing 5-star saves roughly ₹1,600–2,320 every year, all at ₹8/unit.
The BEE label prints an "annual energy consumption" in units, calculated at 1,600 running hours a year using India's seasonal temperature model. For a 1.5-ton split, the two ratings most people actually choose between are 3-star and 5-star. (A common myth: you cannot derive this from capacity × 1,600 ÷ ISEER — that overestimates by roughly 2× because the AC spends most of its time at part load.)

2025-label figures. From 1 January 2026 BEE raised the ISEER thresholds (roughly +10–14%), so a 2025 5-star (ISEER ~5.0–5.2) is now a 2026 4-star, and genuine 2026 5-stars run lower still (an estimated ~620–690 units). 1-star and 2-star 1.5-ton splits are legal but uncommon — the market skews to 3-star and 5-star. How Many Units Does a Refrigerator Use Per Year?
The average Indian refrigerator uses about 461 units of electricity a year — roughly ₹3,688 at ₹8/unit — making it, thanks to running 24×7, often a home's single biggest appliance energy user.
The most reliable number here is not a lab label but real field data: Prayas (Energy Group) smart-metered 86 refrigerators in India and measured what they actually drew.

A current ~250–265 L frost-free double-door on its BEE label, roughly, depending on star rating and size — efficient inverter models sit near the low end (~200–230 units). Real use runs higher than the label, as the field data shows.
Note: conventional double-door frost-free models generally top out around 3-star under current BEE bands. 5-star frost-free ratings do exist but are rare and limited to select premium side-by-side / convertible models (the first, a Samsung 653 L side-by-side, was rated in 2023). How Much Does a Ceiling Fan Cost to Run — and Do BLDC Fans Save Money?
Switching one old ceiling fan to a 5-star BLDC model saves about 198 units a year — roughly ₹1,584 at ₹8/unit — because a BLDC draws ~30 W against ~75 W for an old induction fan.
Fans run for long hours, so small wattage differences add up. BEE rates fans on a service-value (air delivered per watt) scale, but the single biggest lever is motor type.

Does a 5-Star Geyser Actually Save Electricity?
Less than most buyers think. BEE rates a geyser only on standing loss — the heat it wastes while sitting on — so a 5-star saves only about 65 units a year (~₹520) over an old 1-star on a 15 L unit. The energy to actually heat the water is identical across star ratings.
That makes the star rating a minor factor. The real lever is simply switching the geyser off when you don't need it.
The heating cost (same for every star)
Heating 15 litres by 35 °C takes about 0.61 units (a 3 kW geyser draws about 1 unit for every 20 minutes it heats). This depends on water volume and temperature rise — never on the star rating.
The standing-loss difference (what stars change)
On a 15 L unit left switched on all year, a 5-star wastes roughly 139 units vs about 204 units for an older 1-star — a difference of ~65 units (~₹520/year). Real savings come from switching the geyser off when not in use, not the star badge.
Standing-loss figures use the BEE 2023–25 table for a 15 L unit (5-star ≤0.381, 1-star ≤0.558 kWh/24h at 45 °C); BEE tightened these again from July 2026. "If left on all year" = standing loss × 365 and is standby waste only, not total consumption. Sources: IS 2082:1993; BEE water-heater schedule.
Why Isn't There a Simple Annual Figure for Washing Machines?
Because BEE does not publish an annual kWh figure for washing machines — labelling is voluntary and the metric is energy per kilogram per cycle, not per year. So any "units per year" number is an assumption, not a BEE value.
- BEE front-load bands: 5-star ≤0.09 down to 1-star ≤0.18 kWh/kg/cycle (Cotton 60 °C, IEC 60456).
- If you annualise it (7 kg × 208 washes/year at the heated-wash test): roughly 131 units/year (5-star) to 262 units/year (1-star).
- But real Indian use is far lower — most households run cold or eco washes, so real consumption is often just 40–120 units a year. The heater, not the motor, is what the test is really measuring.

What a "Unit" Costs: Electricity Tariffs by State (2025–26)
There is no single national electricity price in India — each state's regulator sets slab-based domestic tariffs, so your top-slab rate is what an extra appliance actually costs to run. The spread is wide:
