Heating water is one of the few appliance costs that is pure physics: it takes exactly 1.163 watt-hours to raise one litre of water by one degree. So a geyser's running cost comes down to how much water you heat and by how many degrees — which is why your winter geyser bill is almost double your summer one. We worked out the real cost per heat, per bath and per month, by geyser size and season, plus the honest truth about what a 5-star rating does and doesn't save.

Why a geyser's cost is just physics
Every geyser — instant or storage, any brand, any star rating — needs the same energy to heat the same water to the same temperature. That energy is fixed by the specific heat of water:
We divide by ~0.95 to allow for tank/standby heat loss during a heat cycle. The resistive element itself is ~100% efficient at turning electricity into heat — there is no “more efficient” way to heat a given amount of water; a better BEE star rating only reduces standby loss between heats (BEE revised the storage water-heater star tables in 2026, but the principle is unchanged).
Cost per heat & per bath, by size and season
Heating a full tank from a cold winter inlet (~25°C rise to a ~45°C target) vs a warm summer inlet (~15°C rise). A bucket bath uses ~15 L of hot water; a shower usually more.

Winter = ~25°C rise (~20°C inlet), summer = ~15°C rise (~30°C inlet), both to a ~45°C target, at ₹8/unit (an upper-slab domestic tariff, where geyser load usually sits). These are representative national averages — peak-winter North India inlet can fall to ~12–15°C (a larger rise and higher cost).
What it adds up to per month
For a 4-person household using about 60 litres of hot water a day in winter (bucket baths / short showers), the geyser adds roughly ₹441 a month. In summer, with warmer inlet water and often less hot water used (~45 L/day), that falls to about ₹198 a month.
Assumes 60 L/day (winter) and 45 L/day (summer) of hot water for a family of four — that's ~15 L/person of bucket-bath usage; shower users draw more and cost more. At ₹8/unit (upper slab). Your usage is the biggest variable — halve the litres and you roughly halve the cost.
