Heating water is one of the few appliance costs that is pure physics: it takes exactly 1.163 watt-hours to raise one litre of water by one degree. So a geyser's running cost comes down to how much water you heat and by how many degrees — which is why your winter geyser bill is almost double your summer one. We worked out the real cost per heat, per bath and per month, by geyser size and season, plus the honest truth about what a 5-star rating does and doesn't save.

Why a geyser's cost is just physics

Every geyser — instant or storage, any brand, any star rating — needs the same energy to heat the same water to the same temperature. That energy is fixed by the specific heat of water:

energy (kWh)  =  litres  ×  temperature rise (°C)  ×  1.163  ÷  1000
cost  =  energy (kWh)  ×  your tariff (₹/unit)

We divide by ~0.95 to allow for tank/standby heat loss during a heat cycle. The resistive element itself is ~100% efficient at turning electricity into heat — there is no “more efficient” way to heat a given amount of water; a better BEE star rating only reduces standby loss between heats (BEE revised the storage water-heater star tables in 2026, but the principle is unchanged).

Winter = ~25°C rise (~20°C inlet), summer = ~15°C rise (~30°C inlet), both to a ~45°C target, at ₹8/unit (an upper-slab domestic tariff, where geyser load usually sits). These are representative national averages — peak-winter North India inlet can fall to ~12–15°C (a larger rise and higher cost).

What it adds up to per month

For a 4-person household using about 60 litres of hot water a day in winter (bucket baths / short showers), the geyser adds roughly 441 a month. In summer, with warmer inlet water and often less hot water used (~45 L/day), that falls to about 198 a month.

The saving that actually works:heat on demand. Switching the geyser on 15–30 minutes before a bath and off after costs far less than leaving a storage tank on all day re-heating water it loses to standby. A 5-star tank leaks less heat, but heating only what you use beats leaving any tank on 24×7.

Why does a geyser cost more to run in winter?
Because the water coming into your tank is colder, so the geyser has to raise it further to reach a comfortable ~45°C. In an Indian winter the inlet might be ~20°C (a 25°C rise); in summer it can be ~30°C (only a 15°C rise). Same tank, same target — but winter needs about 1.7× the energy per litre, which is why the monthly cost roughly doubles.
Does a 5-star BEE geyser save a lot of electricity?
A higher BEE star rating on a storage geyser mainly reduces STANDBY loss — the heat the tank leaks while keeping stored water hot between uses. It does NOT reduce the energy needed to heat the water in the first place (that is fixed physics). So a 5-star geyser saves most for people who leave it switched on continuously; if you already switch your geyser on only when needed, the star rating saves relatively little. The bigger lever is heating only what you use and not leaving the tank on 24×7.
Is it cheaper to leave the geyser on all day or switch it on before a bath?
For almost everyone, switch it on before use. Leaving a storage geyser on all day means it repeatedly re-heats water it loses to standby leakage — you pay to keep water hot you are not using. A well-insulated 5-star tank leaks less, but even then, heating on demand (15–30 minutes before a bath) is cheaper than 24×7 standby for typical Indian usage of one or two bathing sessions a day.
How much does one bucket bath cost to heat?
A bucket bath uses roughly 15–20 litres of hot water. In winter (a ~25°C rise) that is about 0.46–0.61 kWh, or roughly ₹3.7–₹4.9 at ₹8 a unit. In summer it is around half that. A shower typically uses more water than a bucket, so it costs more — the cost is set by the litres of hot water you use, not by how you use them.
Instant (tankless) vs storage geyser — which is cheaper to run?
To heat the same amount of water to the same temperature, both use essentially the same energy — the physics is identical. The difference is standby loss: an instant/tankless geyser holds little or no water, so it has almost no standby leakage, while a storage geyser loses some heat keeping its tank warm. So an instant geyser can be cheaper if you take short, infrequent draws; a storage geyser suits a household that wants a buffer of hot water for back-to-back baths.
