  • Running cost = rated kW × hours × ₹/unit. One "unit" on your bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh).
  • Tariff assumption: ₹8/unit. Indian tariffs are state-set and slab-based, so what matters is your marginal (top-slab) rate. ₹8 is a typical higher-slab figure — see the state table. To adjust any cost here, multiply by (your rate ÷ 8).
  • Runtime assumption: 8 hours/night. Most people run a humidifier overnight in the bedroom. A built-in humidistat switches it off once the target humidity is reached, so real bills are often lower than these full-runtime figures.
  • Type matters most. Ultrasonic ~25 W and evaporative ~30–80 W are cheap; warm-mist 200–400 W is 8–12× more because it heats water.

For an ultrasonic unit the tariff barely matters — it is a few rupees a month anywhere. It only bites on a warm-mist unit: the same 250 W unit costs about ₹312 a month in Gujarat but around ₹1,061a month in Mumbai — a 3.4× difference driven entirely by the electricity tariff.

Humid coastal cities: Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Goa, coastal Karnataka, and anywhere during the Jun–Sep monsoon. There the air already sits above 60% humidity, so adding moisture invites mould — you want a dehumidifier, not a humidifier.

Evaporative units sit in between — a touch more power than ultrasonic (30–80 W) but they self-regulate and never produce white dust, which makes them a good hard-water choice. If you go ultrasonic in a hard-water city, use boiled-and-cooled or distilled/RO water and clean the tank every few days to avoid mineral dust and mould.
